GMAT tutoring - find GMAT help online

More than 1,900 schools use Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) results in the evaluation of program candidates. Before taking any big test, it's beneficial to understand what you are getting yourself into, especially when the test can make such a huge impact on your business education and career. According to the Graduate Management Admission Council, researchers at the University of Iowa and the University of Central Florida performed a study that found the GMAT does an even better job of predicting future academic performance and persistence in business graduate programs than previously thought.

Knowing what your focus should be, learning specific test-taking tips, and studying the most important test elements will not only help you do well on the test, but could help with your confidence, as well. Online GMAT preparation materials or a GMAT tutor can help with your test success and confidence level. You'll be glad to know there are several online and in-person resources available, many of which are free.

What can I expect?

The GMAT is a computer-based (and adaptive) assessment test for graduate business candidates used to measure skills in three areas:

  • Verbal: reading comprehension, critical reasoning, sentence correction
  • Quantitative: problem solving and data sufficiency--you will need to know math, including elementary algebra and common geometry concepts
  • Analytical writing: analysis of an issue, analysis of an argument--you will not only be expected to explain your own views on a subject, but you'll need to be able to analyze the reason behind a specific argument

Finding a tutor

Your learning style may determine how you go about preparing for the GMAT. Maybe you do better learning in person, or maybe you are the opposite and learn best at your own pace online. There are resources to find a tutor for both options:

  • TutorFinder: Search for a tutor by subject, location or grade level. You can find in-person and online tutors through our TutorFinder.
  • VolunteerMatch: This free service will give you information for tutor volunteers based on location and academic subject.

Additional resources

If you'd rather learn on your own, there are resources available in public libraries and online that will help you prepare for the GMAT:

  • Khan Academy: Khan Academy is a free online service offering more than 2,400 tutoring videos on different subjects. GMAT-specific videos feature presenters working out all of the problems in the GMAT test prep books, step-by-step.
  • Graduate Management Admission Council: GMAC is the organization that created and administers the GMAT. GMAC's official website offers test-prep materials for sale in each of the test's areas for focus on specific skills, or you can purchase them all for a well-rounded preparation.
  • Public libraries: No matter where you are, your public library is a great resource. The San Francisco Public Library, for example, has GMAT test prep books with sample tests inside for help.

One of the key components of GMAT success is being able to go into the test feeling confident knowing you've done all you can to prepare. There are many options available to help you do just that.
